California Highway Patrol Officer succumbs to his injuries

Rick Mattos, President of the California Association of Highway Patrolmen, sends this unfortunate update on CHP Officer Phillip Ortiz:

It is with a heavy heart that I inform you of the passing of California Highway Patrol Officer Phillip Ortiz. Officer Ortiz was injured when he was on a traffic stop and was struck by a motorist who was driving on the shoulder. The collision occurred on June 9, 2010. Officer Ortiz had been hospitalized in critical condition and succumbed to his injuries on June 22, 2010.  He is survived by his wife, sister, parents and large extended family.  He is the 218th CHP Officer killed in the line of duty since 1929 and the third this month.

The NY State Troopers PBA sends its thoughts and prayers to the family, friends and fellow law enforcement officers of Officer Phillip Ortiz.
