Troopers at Work
|
State Troopers PBA members who serve as pilots in the State Police Aviation Unit perform numerous duties such as helping rescue injured individuals from difficult terrain using hoists, searching for marijuana fields, tracking fleeing criminals in the dark using special radar, transporting critically injured patients to local hospitals, surveillance missions, and the deployment and training of the State Police Mobile Response Team (similar to a SWAT team).
Since the beginning of the New York State Police in 1917, the duties of New York State Troopers have changed with the times. Horses have been replaced with patrol vehicles, aircraft and boats. Uniforms and equipment have been updated. While these and many other aspects of the job of a New York State Trooper have changed, our members' professionalism and dedication to serving and protecting the public has only strengthened with each passing year.

Children enjoy meeting a New York State Trooper and his K-9 partner during a community event. The jobs of State Troopers PBA members also involve teaching children about safety and becoming involved in the communities in which they live and work.
Today, Troopers serve and protect the residents of New York state in a wide variety of ways. After successfully completing a rigorous six months of academic and physical training at the New York State Police Academy followed by extensive training on patrol with experienced Troopers, many of our members choose to undertake further instruction for specialized units. Specialty jobs include those of K-9 handler, scuba diver, or a member of the Mobile Response Team (similar to a SWAT team), bomb disposal unit, or the commercial vehicle enforcement unit. In addition, teams of Troopers who specialize in gun and drug interdiction and criminal investigation are being asked by municipalities across the state to assist local police departments in combating crime waves.

The presence of State Troopers PBA members has been increased at the state Capitol in Albany and other government buildings with the current emphasis on homeland security.
Troopers who focus on patrol duties are the backbone of protection for the state's residents. Our members respond at a moment's notice to all types of criminal incidents - homicides, robberies, and burglaries, just to name a few - while simultaneously promoting traffic safety. Whether Troopers are on alert for a drunken driver menacing the highway or helping a grandmother whose car has broken down, they complete their duties with care, compassion, professionalism and integrity.

State Troopers PBA members who serve on the SCUBA detail have been involved in numerous high-profile rescues and recoveries, including the TWA Flight 800 crash off Long Island, the Stellamare that overturned at the Port of Albany, and the Thruway bridge collapse in Montgomery County.
Following the terrorist attacks of 9/11, Troopers' duties changed even more drastically. By nightfall on 9/11, more than 500 Troopers from across the state were deployed to NYC. For the next five months, State Troopers PBA members guarded bridges and highways into the city, assisted with recovery efforts at Ground Zero, worked with municipal police in the area and helped promote a sense of security. Our members' involvement in homeland security continues today as they help safeguard the Canadian border, ensure protection of the Capitol and other government buildings, work to collect, interpret and disseminate intelligence at the Upstate NY Regional Intelligence Center, and remain on the lookout during their patrol duties for suspicious activity.
