Supplemental Fund Explanation

Many members have asked how much the State pays per member to the Employee Benefit Fund for investment in the PBA Supplemental Fund.

During contract negotiations a fixed amount of money for the Troopers and Supervisors unit is established. That fixed amount of money comes from previous negotiations, and then a variable amount is negotiated for raises per member for each year of the contract.

The fixed amount and variable amount of money can be added together and then divided by the current number of members in each unit to establish the amount paid per member.

Example:
Troopers – Contract year 4/1/2023 – 3/31/2024
Fixed amount – $1,364,119
Variable amount – $170,947 ($59.73 per member x 2,862 members)
Amount paid per member – ($1,364,119 + $170,947) ÷ 2,862 = $536.36

The amount paid per member per contract year for each unit is calculated below. Based on the calculations below, the Supervisors get slightly less per member than the Troopers unit. This has no effect on the actual payout to members from the Fund because the checks are calculated based on eligible years of service and not which unit a member was in.

When received, the money paid by the State for both units is combined and then deposited and invested through the Fund. The difference in the amount paid per member is caused by the number of members in each unit at the time the payout is calculated. As you can see the benefit increase (variable amount per member) is the same for both units.

Variable amount per member (Supervisors and Troopers):
2023: $59.73
2024: $61.52
2025: $63.37

Amount paid per member:

Supervisors unit:
2023: ($365,888 fixed + $48,441 variable) ÷ 811 = $510.89
2024: ($365,888 fixed + $49,708 variable) ÷ 808 = $510.35
2025*: ($365,888 fixed + $51,963 variable) ÷ 820 = $509.57

Troopers unit:
2023: ($1,364,119 fixed + $170,947 variable) ÷ 2,862 = $536.36
2024: ($1,364,119 fixed + $183,760 variable) ÷ 2,987 = $518.21
2025*: ($1,364,119 fixed + $190,110 variable) ÷ 3,000 = $518.08
